The Heritage of Basant

Basant is a vibrant festival of Eastern Punjab (India) and Western Punjab (Pakistan). It is a centuries-old cultural celebration popularized by Maharajah Ranjeet Singh in the early 19th century, organized as a major spring kite flying festival in Lahore, Punjab.

It signifies the start of the spring season with blooming yellow mustard fields in February. People celebrate with yellow attire, traditional cuisine, festive music, and kite flying battles from their rooftops. Kite flying is the beating heart of this festival, and Lahore remains its cultural hub.
